Phone satellite texting vs a satellite messenger (iPhone, T-Satellite, Pixel)
Many phones sold since 2022 can already text by satellite. Before you spend $200–$500 on a messenger, check whether your phone covers what you need.

Where a dedicated messenger still wins
- Battery: Messengers are built to last days or weeks of tracking (for example, ZOLEO lists 200+ hours and the Garmin Messenger Plus lists up to 600 hours in low-power mode). A phone pointed at the sky drains fast.
- Coverage: Phone services only work in the countries they list. Garmin and ZOLEO use the Iridium network, which covers the whole globe.
- Toughness: Messengers are rated IP67/IP68 and you can clip them to a pack strap.
- Tracking and check-ins: Messengers can send scheduled location points and one-button check-ins for people at home.
Where the phone wins
- Cost: $0–$10 a month instead of $15–$50, and no device to buy.
- Nothing extra to carry or charge.
Our take
If you do day hikes and car camping inside the US and you already have a compatible phone, phone satellite texting is a solid backup. For multi-day trips, solo trips, travel abroad, or when someone at home needs to see your tracking, a messenger is still worth it. Compare satellite plans here.
