Garmin inReach vs ZOLEO (2026): real 2-year cost
Both use satellites to send texts and SOS from almost anywhere. The real difference is the cost: ZOLEO's device is cheaper, Garmin's plans can be suspended for free, and their message limits differ.
Two-year cost, cheapest sensible setup
- ZOLEO + Prepare plan: $698.75 (ZOLEO Satellite Communicator (ZL1500) $199.00 + ZOLEO Prepare $19.99 × 24 + $19.99 activation)
- Garmin inReach Messenger Plus + Essential: $799.74 (inReach Messenger Plus $399.99 + Garmin inReach Essential $14.99 × 24 + $39.99 activation)
- Garmin inReach Mini 3 + Essential: $849.74 (inReach Mini 3 $449.99 + Garmin inReach Essential $14.99 × 24 + $39.99 activation)
These totals assume you pay every month for 24 months at list prices. Taxes and overage charges aren't included.
If you only go out a few months a year
This is where the two differ the most:
- Garmin lets you suspend a plan for up to 12 months at $0 with no reactivation fee, and on select devices SOS stays available while suspended (per Garmin's plan page).
- ZOLEO lets you pause after the first 3-month minimum term for $4.50/month. While it's paused, SOS is off, but you keep your ZOLEO phone number and email address.

Which should you pick?
- Pick ZOLEO if you want the lowest upfront cost, a dedicated SMS number and email, and you'll use it year-round.
- Pick Garmin if you go out seasonally and want to suspend for free, or you want a device you can type on without your phone (Mini 3 / Mini 3 Plus touchscreens).
- Check your phone first. Newer iPhones and some Android phones can already text by satellite. See phone satellite texting vs a messenger.
